What is an enzyme cleaner?
An enzyme cleaner is a cleaner that contains enzymes. Enzymes are proteins that cut particular molecules into smaller pieces.
That sounds circular, so here is the useful version. A detergent lifts a stain off a surface and suspends it in water so you can rinse it away. An enzyme cleaner does something different: it takes the stain apart chemically, turning big molecules into small ones. For a smell, that distinction matters enormously, because a smell is molecules reaching your nose. Lift them off the carpet and they are still molecules. Cut them up and there is nothing left to smell.
This is why enzyme cleaners are the standard answer for urine, vomit, blood and food, and why they are irrelevant for limescale, rust or a mineral ring in a kettle. Those are not organic messes. There is nothing for an enzyme to cut.
What Does Not Count
The category has a definition problem, largely because the word gets used loosely in marketing. None of these contain enzymes:
- Vinegar, which is dilute acetic acid
- Baking soda, which is an alkaline powder that absorbs odor rather than digesting it
- OxiClean and similar, which release oxygen to bleach a stain lighter
- Hydrogen peroxide, an oxidiser
- Dish soap, a surfactant
Several of these are genuinely useful. None of them work by the mechanism an enzyme cleaner works by, and swapping one for the other is the most common reason people conclude that enzyme cleaners are a scam.
The One That Catches People Out
Biological laundry detergent is an enzyme cleaner and always has been. If you have been buying a specialist enzyme spray for protein stains on clothing while also owning a box of biological detergent, you own two versions of the same technology at very different prices per ounce.
